Founded in 1919 in England, Bentley is a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, consolidated under Audi in 2022. Best known for winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929, and 1930, the luxury car maker was once merged with Rolls-Royce. Bentley did not have a vehicle in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race after 1930 for many decades but debuted the EXP 8 in 2001. The company won its first Le Mans in 73 years shortly after, taking home the win in 2003.
Bentley's first car was the EXP 1, which was finished in London in 1919. Only three were built, and each car had a 3.0-liter four-cylinder engine with aluminum pistons. Today, Bentley makes a variety of cars and SUVs. Its current model line includes the Continental, Flying Spur, Bentayga, Bentayga Hybrid, Mulsanne, and Mulliner. Bentley sold 14,369 vehicles globally in 2021, a record number of sales for the company, beating its previous record set in 2020.
Bentley is currently expanding its EV line, building off the launch of the Bentayga Hybrid and Flying Spur Hybrid. It recently announced its Five-in-Five plan, which is a commitment by the company to release a new EV model every year from 2025 to 2030. The company also plans to be fully carbon-neutral by 2030; in addition, it intends to have every model it sells after 2030 be fully electric.
