Becoming its own independent brand in 2015, Genesis is the luxury car division of Hyundai Motor Company. The original concept for Genesis was created in 2003, but it didn't see its first production model until 2008. The company is best known for winning the JD Power award for the most dependable brand in 2020 and the award for the most technologically innovative brand in 2021.
The first car to carry the Genesis name was the 2009 Hyundai Genesis, which came with the option of a 3.3 to 3.8-L V6 engine or a 4.6 to 5.0-liter V8 engine. The vehicle originally cost $33,000, the equivalent of $41,532 in current value. Today, Genesis makes a variety of luxury vehicles, including sedans, coupes, crossovers, and SUVs. Its current model lineup includes the G70, G80, G90, GV60, GV70, and GV80. Genesis sold 49,630 vehicles in the US in 2021, which was the highest sales to date for the company.
Genesis, along with Kia and Hyundai, recently announced a plan to invest more than $16 billion into battery-electric vehicles by 2030. This includes the introduction of six luxury Genesis EVs. The company also plans to phase out its internal combustion engine vehicles by 2025, with the intention of having an entirely electric vehicle lineup by 2030. Beyond that, the company hopes to have net-zero carbon emissions by 2035.
