Founded in 1992, Hummer was originally a model line under AM General based on its military Humvee design. Though Hummer was discontinued in 2010, the brand returned (under the ownership of GMC) in 2020. Best known for its signature Hummer series, the brand was criticized at the peak of its popularity for making "gas-guzzlers", a valid criticism considering its model lines had consistently low mpg. In response, the new brand of Hummer released two EV models, a pickup truck and an SUV.
The first Hummer made was the 1992 Hummer H1, and the company quickly made several variations: a hard top model, a soft top model, and an "Alpha Wagon" model. The Hummer was praised for its rugged off-roading abilities, with wide tracks capable of traveling nearly 3 feet deep through water. The 1994 Hummer H1 cost $39,500, the equivalent of $72,222 in current value. In its original iteration (before its 2010 discontinuation), Hummer sold 71,524 vehicles in the US in 2006, its best-selling year.
Hummer’s current plans for the future involve a prototype EV purpose-built for the military, the electric Light Reconnaissance Vehicle or eLRV. It also intends to expand its EV line with a Hummer EV SUV coming in 2024. This EV SUV, called the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV, will go into production in 2023, along with an all-electric version of the Sierra Denali.
