Originally founded in 1909, Maybach was acquired in 1960 by Daimler-Benz. The company once again became a standalone brand in 2002 before becoming a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz in 2015. Best known for its ultra-luxury vehicles, Maybach is named after its founder, Wilhelm Maybach.
Maybach's first automobile was the 1921 W3, which debuted at the Berlin Motorshow. The vehicle featured a 5.7 L inline-six engine capable of producing 70 horsepower. The W3 also had a four-wheel brake system, a newer innovation that used mechanical braking power compensation to increase driver safety. Today, Maybach makes a variety of luxury vehicles. Its model lineup includes the S-Class, GLS-Class, S560, S650, 57, 62, and Landaulet. Maybach sold 15,730 of its more expensive vehicle models worldwide in 2021. The company has been expanding into the Chinese vehicle market, where it's finding a much higher demand than in the US.
Maybach is expanding its EV operations after the release of its ultra-luxury EV, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV. Displayed at the 2021 Munich auto show, the EQS SUV will be able to reach a range of 370 miles per charge while still delivering significant power and high acceleration. Production began on the vehicle at Maybach's plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and will use batteries manufactured by the company's battery factory in Bibb County. The vehicle's price is estimated to be around $200,000 and will come in two variations: the EQS 450+ base model and the high-performance EQS 580 4MATIC.
