About Mazda

Founded in 1920 in Japan, Mazda was created by Jujurio Matsuda. Named for Ahura Mazda, the god of harmony, intelligence, and wisdom, Mazda started by manufacturing three-wheeled vehicles called rickshaws. Best known for its rotary engine technology, Mazda also made it into the 2000 Guinness World Book of Records for its MX-5 Roadster, which at the time was the best-selling two-seat sports car.

While the company started with rickshaws, its first production car was the Cosmo Sport 110 S. Built in 1967, the Cosmo Sport 110 S was the world’s first production vehicle with a two-rotor engine. The vehicle originally cost 1,480,000 Yen, or $10,788 USD (the equivalent of $75,345 in current value). Today, Mazda makes various cars and SUVs; its current model line includes the CX-3, CX-5, CX-8, CX-9, CX-30, MX-5, MX-5 RF, MX-30, BT-50, and the Mazda 2 and 3. Mazda sold 328,237 vehicles in the US in 2021, marking the company’s highest sales in recent years.

Mazda has plans to expand its EV line but has stated that it won't lose the internal combustion engineering advancements it has made over the years. The company also intends to use less-common fuel sources like hydrogen batteries and biofuel. Mazda has said it wants 25% of its global product line to be fully BEVs, with most of its cars still being powered by internal combustion engines by 2030.
