Created in 1870, Misibushi was founded in Japan by Yatarō Iwasaki and is currently part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. The company's name comes from a combination of "mitsu", the Japanese word for three, and "hishi", the Japanese word for a species of plant called the water caltrop. Mitsubishi is likely best known for its distinct model line, like the Mitsubishi Eclipse. The 1995 Eclipse was featured in The Fast and the Furious, driven by Paul Walker’s character Brian O’Conner.
While the company initially manufactured aircraft engines and other parts, the first automobile that Mitsubishi produced was the 1917 Model A. The vehicle was a 4-door sedan powered by a 2.8 L straight-4 engine capable of producing 35 horsepower. The company quickly discontinued the car, as it was hand-made and costly to manufacture. Today, Mitsubishi makes various cars and crossovers, including the Outlander, Outlander PHEV, Eclipse, Eclipse Cross, Outlander, Outlander Sport, Mirage, and Mirage G4. Mitsubishi’s record for the highest sales in a single year was set in 2002 with 345,915 total units.
Mitsubishi plans to expand its EV line, building off its current and future electric vehicle line. This line includes the Engelboug Tourer, a crossover SUV with an EV/PHEV, a bi-directional charger, solar panels, and a battery you can charge at home. Its current and future line also includes the e-Evolution Concept, a high-performance all-electric SUV crossover that will feature artificial intelligence components.
