Founded in 2003 in the United States, Tesla is an automotive and clean energy company. Currently headquartered in Austin, Texas, the automotive division of Tesla is best known for its line of electric vehicles. The company is also well known for its founder Elon Musk, who has seen a series of controversies over the years regarding both himself and the vehicles his company manufactures.
The first automobile that Tesla manufactured was the Roadster, a fully-electric car capable of reaching a range of 245 miles between charges. The vehicle could also accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than four seconds and had a top speed of 125 mph. The first version of the Roadster, released in 2012, cost $109,000. This is the equivalent of $128,643 in current value. Today, Tesla makes a variety of luxury electric vehicles. Its lineup includes the Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Model Y. Tesla sold 301,998 vehicles in the US in 2021, setting a new record in sales for the company. Currently, the Tesla Model Y is on track to become the world's best-selling car, with sales on track to overtake the current titleholder, the Toyota Corolla.
Though it released no new models in 2022, Tesla plans to release several new automotive products in 2023, including the Cybertruck, a new Roadster, and an electric semi-truck. The company also says it intends to find a way to lower the price of its cars in an effort to make its luxury lines more accessible and affordable.
