Chevrolet is a formidable, global brand at the forefront of the automotive sector’s foundation and leadership trends. Chevrolet has been a leader in the industry for over 100 years, with its original mission statement, “A Car for Every Purse and Purpose.”

Deciphering a Chevrolet VIN

The fastest and most accurate way to decode a Chevrolet VIN is to use the GoodCar VIN Decoder. This handy application gives prospective owners, business personnel, and fleet managers a wealth of information on any specific Chevrolet car or truck. Use the decoder tool to find information on the four premium brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC. I

Chevrolet formats its VINs according to the 1981 NHTSA requirements. Each position in the 17-character code represents specific information that Chevrolet wants to distribute to the public. The string comprises letters and numbers; no two VIN codes are identical.

Unique to Chevrolet, the company adds a partial VIN stamped on the engine block near the back. The first digit gives the GM Division (Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, or GMC), the second digit is the model year, and the third is the assembly plant. The remaining six positions should match the last six of the full VIN. Some older small-block Chevy engines have the partial VIN stamped onto the intake manifold.

Where Can I Find the VIN on My Chevrolet?

The Chevrolet VIN, like all other passenger cars and trucks, is printed on a small plate attached to the driver’s side dashboard at the windshield. According to NHTSA requirements, the VIN must be visible through the glass. The second NHTSA location is on a small plaque at the driver’s side pillar. The tag will be near the bottom of the pillar and the door sill. Other helpful information is included, such as the types of tires and the air pressure needed. A second grey sticker on the pillar may list the VIN, month, and year produced.
