There are iconic names across the automotive landscape, and then there are names like Jaguar’s legendary1961 E-Type 77 RW, which captivated the world. The two-seater was revolutionary in its design and performance, claiming a top speed of 150 mph and a sub-7-second 0 to 60mph. In excellent condition, a series 1 roadster can cost collectors over $320,000.

Jaguar began operations in 1922, and the first model imported into the US was the XK120. By 1953, the brand was the best-selling import in America. The modern Jaguar has developed into sleek new crossover SUVs, stylish sedans, and visually stunningspecial operation vehicles.

In 1954, the NHTSA began requiring standardized VINs on all road vehicles. From 1954 to 1981, Imported Jaguar models had several different prefix numbers and various other characters.

Each character of a Jaguar VIN encodes specific information the manufacturer wants its users to know. Given the leeway, automakers will combine characters to offer users a greater understanding of the specific vehicle. Jaguar follows the three identifier subsections developed by theDepartment of Motor Vehicles. 1) World Manufacturer Identifier 2) Vehicle Descriptor Section 3) Vehicle Identifier Section. The sections give the VIN more clarity.

VIN Digit
Meaning
1st
The first character of a Jaguar VIN is the country of origin. Countries may include the United Kingdom, the United States, Austria, India, or China.
2nd
A manufacturer is displayed in the second position, and this will be, for example, SAJ.
3rd
Character three describes the vehicle type or division. Some manufacturers use this character as a code for the vehicle category, a division within the automaker, or both. If the automaker builds less than 1000 vehicles per year, this character is a 9.
4th
Character four of the Jaguar VIN is the specific market where the vehicle is to be sold and the airbag or safety systems.
5th
Character five is the transmission type and steering type in a specific Jaguar. For example, AWD automatic/LHD, AWD manual/RHD, and FWD automatic/LHD.
6th & 7th
Characters six and seven are used to describe the Jaguar’s body code. For example, the descriptions may include 4-Door High Series or 4-Door High Series Estate.
8th
Position eight describes the type of emission, such as ECS 2 or ECS 10. (EMS = Emission Control System)
9th
Character nine, as in all other VINs, is the check digit. This digit is used to verify the validity of a VIN. Character nine is a mathematical equation developed by the Department of Transportation that uses all other characters for validation. The characters can be the numbers 0 through 9 or the letter X.
10th
All VINs must capture the model year in the tenth position. The number may be different from the calendar year, and thirty characters are approved for the position. If the 7th digit is a number, the model year is between 1981 and 2009. If it is an alpha character, the model year is 2010 or later.
11th
Character eleven is the assembly plant where a specific Jaguar was assembled. The brand has plants located throughout the world with the main facility in Birmingham, England. Other plant locations include China, India, and New Jersey.
12th-17th
Characters twelve through seventeen are production serial numbers. With Jaguar's rich history, collectors use these numbers to find original parts for older cars.

Jaguar VIN Locations

Jaguar uses the two positions mandated by theNHTSA.

  • The first location of the VIN is located on the driver’s side dashboard at the windshield. The VIN should be stamped on a non-removal plaque that must be seen through the glass.
  • The second mandated position is at the driver’s side pillar, about halfway down the post. The VIN must be stamped on a plaque along with other information, such as tire size and recommended pressures.

Jaguar E-Type

Jaguar E-Type

Pictures of the Jaguar E-Type Jaguar fail to do justice to the actual wheels on the ground automobile. Nothing short of spectacular comes to mind. The1961 E-Type introduced to the world at the Geneva Motor Show stunned those in attendance. They never had a two-seater British sports car that had unmistakable one-of-a-kind styling and performance attributes. A top speed of over 140 mph and a 0 to 60 in under 7 seconds impressed everyone. The E-Type was never intended for the track; however, demand far outpaced production facilities. Racing legends of the time saw trophies lined up on their stands. Unfortunately, the E-Type was never able to make the top podium for any international race. The final design of the E-Type came in 1971 with the Series Three, a 5.3 liter V12 engine producing a massive 266hp. There have been many copies of the E-Type, but none have come close to the original design and concept.
