Lexus VIN Decoder

Lexus VIN Decoder

The Lexus name has been theorized as a combination of luxury and elegance, while the etymology suggests it is an acronym for “luxury exports to the US.” Either way, the brand produces one of the most recognizable cars in the world.

Lexus is owned by Toyota and offers upscale buyers cutting-edge technology, a distinctive style, luxurious interiors, and powerful performance features. It also offers an exciting driving experience.

Lexus's first automobile for the American market was the 1989 LS 400, meaning the brand has been under the NHTSA 17-digit alphanumeric VIN direction since it began building automobiles. The Lexus VIN is a character combination of letters and numbers laid out in a pre-determined sequence that provides the user with a wealth of information on a specific Lexus model.

Before 1981, automakers serialized their automobiles using a sequence of random characters. However, each builder used internal numbering without regard to the dynamic growth of the automobile industry happening around them. It wasn’t until 1981 that the United States and the world accepted the NHTSA’s 17-digit code, using the VIN still in use today.

The GoodCar VIN Decoder service is an excellent tool for discovering everything the manufacturer wants you to know about their automobiles. Input the Lexus 17-digit code sequence into the application, and you'll instantly know the model where the vehicle was built, its restraint system, and much more.

VIN Digit
Meaning
1st
The first position of the Lexus VIN tells the user the general geographic area or region where the specific model was produced. Lexus currently has two plants in Japan, two in the United States, and one in Canada.
2nd
The second position provides the exact country of origin. In this case, Japan, Canada, and the United States are the primary build locations.
3rd
Position three indicates the automaker. In addition, the third position can be combined with the other two digits to give the user more clarity on the VIN.
4th - 8th
Positions four through eight are the meat of the Lexus VIN code, telling the user engine specifications, transmission types, body styles, gross vehicle weight range, and restraint systems. From a decoding standpoint, these four positions contain most of the valuable information in the 17-digit code.
4th
Position four of the Lexus VIN tells the user model-specific information and is usually combined with other positions.
5th
Position five represents the exact model and series of a specific Lexus; it may be combined with the fourth position to describe a model.
6th - 7th
Positions six and seven indicate the body style and type, such as a two- or four-door and a hatchback.
8th
Position eight indicates the engine size. This is especially helpful for mechanics and collectors who need to know the exact engine size and type when ordering OEM parts.
9th
Position nine is the checksum digit. This character is used with a pre-determined algorithm to validate the VIN. GoodCar uses an embedded algorithm to validate the VIN online.
10th - 17th
The manufacturer uses positions ten through seventeen to identify a specific vehicle. The numbers are most often used as serial or sequence numbers.
10th
Position ten gives the exact year a specific Lexus was built. Depending on age, this position may be represented by a letter or number and may differ from the actual production date.
11th
Position eleven describes the exact plant where a specific Lexus model was built and assembled.
12th - 17th
The last six positions give the production line number or serial number. Collectors find these digits useful because they allow them to track a part down if vehicle changes occur during a production run. These numbers also describe technology add-ons such as sensor-based and lane-assist.

Lexus Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins

  • On April 7, 2024, Lexus and the NHTSA recalled several LS and ES models due to problems with the Panoramic View Monitor. The issue is due to the incorrect programming of the parking-assist ECU (electronic control unit) software. The image may not appear for several seconds after the shifter is put into reverse, increasing the chances of a crash. Owners are advised to immediately visit the dealership to reprogram the ERCU free of charge.
  • On December 19, 2023, Lexus and the NHTSA recalled the ES, LS, and RX models, including hybrids and all-electrics, due to a short circuit that may develop in the OCS (occupant safety system) sensor. The faulty sensor may prevent the airbag from deploying. Dealers will inspect and replace any sensor free of charge.
  • Any Lexus manufactured between 2002 and 2017 may be affected by the Takata Airbag Recall. At last count, the total number of vehicles affected by the global recall has reached over 33 million. Notices are constantly being sent to owners if their car is affected. The Lexus dealer will replace and repair any faulty sensors free of charge.
