How To Lookup Oklahoma License Plates
Oklahoma license plate lookup is a way to find some information about vehicles registered in the state. When you perform a license plate lookup, you can view vehicle information such as the model year, make, and vehicle color. If you are looking to perform a license plate lookup, you can do it online or offline. To perform an offline lookup, you must visit the Department of Motor Vehicles division of the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety. This division maintains motor vehicle records and allows authorized individuals like insurance, law enforcement, or towing companies to conduct a license plate lookup. If you do not qualify to perform an offline license plate lookup, you can use a third-party service, such as GoodCar, to perform an online Oklahoma license plate lookup. As permitted by law, GoodCar only provides access to legally allowed vehicle information.
Why Run a License Plate Search in Oklahoma?
An Oklahoma license plate lookup can be done for several reasons. One reason would be to verify that a vehicle has a clean history before purchasing it. This is especially useful if you are buying a used card. If you are in this position, GoodCar can be useful in conducting a license plate lookup and consequently preventing scams and frauds that may arise from cloned VINs or inaccurately reported vehicle history by the seller. It is also easier to run a license plate search in California compared to a VIN search since VINs are usually printed in difficult-to-read locations and contain longer characters than license plates.
What Can You Get Out of a Oklahoma License Plate Lookup?
You can get valuable information about a car from an Oklahoma license plate lookup. Since a license plate helps a vehicle maintain unique identification, you can get specific information about a vehicle by performing a license plate search. Oklahoma motor vehicle records are maintained by the Department of Public Safety. While GoodCar can provide access to publicly available information about a car as allowed by law, the state’s Driver Privacy and Protection Act restricts personal information from being released to the public.
Why Choose GoodCar for Oklahoma Plate Lookups?
Requesters can benefit from extensive vehicle records and reports as they obtain information from accredited data providers like the NMVTIS. GoodCar also illustrates theft checks, collision records, recalls, flood, hail, or fire damage, and pricing.

Oklahoma License Plates
License plates were first required of vehicles in the state in 1915. Between 1915 and 1919 single plates were required. That requirement has changed a few times since then. However, since 1944, only rear plates have been required. Oklahoma license plates are issued by Service Oklahoma and they belong to individuals and not the registered vehicles.
Due to a recently (November 2023) approved law (HB 1390) in Oklahoma, vehicle owners are now allowed to operate their vehicles with temporary license plates for up to 60 days. Beyond that, motorists must have permanent license plates. In order to get a license plate in Oklahoma, you must complete a vehicle title and registration with Service Oklahoma or at a licensed operator location. To complete these processes, you will need a Manufacturer Certificate of Origin, valid driver's license, lien documentation (if applicable), verification of liability insurance, completed Form 701-6, Form BM-26, and Form 722-1-a or vehicle purchase price documentation. You will be issued a license plate after completing the title and registration process.
OK License Plate Renewal
Typically, Oklahoma license plates are renewed annually following the renewal of your vehicle registration. You can renew your Oklahoma license plate online or in person at a Service Oklahoma location. Online renewals can be completed the month preceding the date of the registration expiration. You must have the following ready to complete an online renewal:
- Driver's license of Federal Employer Identification Number
- License plate number
- The last four characters of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Valid Oklahoma insurance policy
- A valid credit card or check
To renew your license plate in person, visit a Service Oklahoma location, with your VIN, current driver's license, and proof of Oklahoma vehicle insurance. After paying the required fee, you will be issued a new decal and registration. To check the status of your license plate renewal, use the Where Is My Renewal resource available on the Service Oklahoma website.
